Carbon is a group 14 element. Widely appearing through out nature. You can find a lot of it in the sun, stars, comets, and the atmosphere of most all the planets. In Mars atmosphere there is approximately 92% Co2.
Carbon is found abundantly in three primary forms: amorphous, graphite, and diamond. Graphite as you know is one of the softest known materials, and Diamonds are the hardest. Diamonds in microscopic size may be found in meteorites. Natural Diamonds are found in volcanic vents such as in South Africa. Also in Cape of Good Hope diamonds have been recovered off the ocean floor.
Most Carbon around us is in the air we breathe and the natural waters most of us swim in. Carbon Dioxide or Co2 for short. It is a component of rocks as carbonates of calcium, magnesium, and iron. Hydrocarbons are mainly coal, petroleum, and natural gases. Carbon is unique for it’s versatility on making a vast number compounds.
In 1961 the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) adopted the isotope 12C as the basis for atomic weights. Carbon-14, 14C, an isotope with a half-life of 5730 years, is used to date such materials as wood, archeological specimens, etc. Carbon-13, 13C, is particularly useful for isotopic labeling studies since it is not radioactive, but is a spin I = 1/2 nucleus and therefore a good NMR nucleus.
